Science- A visit to the butterfly garden

Brayden and Jack. Two scientists hard at work!

Jacob

All of my scientists in the butterfly garden.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar has nothing on this guy!!!

So today we visited our school's butterfly garden. We have been talking about our 5 senses and how scientists use their 5 senses to observe and record. When this adventure was planned I had not been to the garden in quite some time. Was I shocked???!!!! There are caterpillars and butterflies everywhere! It was so exciting to see the students running all around with their clipboards and recording the things they see, hear, smell, and touch!!! YEH- we left out taste! Not fun in the butterfly garden!

Buggin' Out!!!!

In our class for the past few weeks we have been learning about different types of insects. We wrote a report about spiders and about butterflies! We also learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly last week! Mr. Bill came to our class and helped create the most beautiful, cute, creative bulletin board EVER! We transformed each student into a BUG and displayed their hard work from the past couple of weeks. Now we have a wonderful springtime display in the hallway! Way to go first graders AND...Way to go Mr. Bill!!!!!

Today we are celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday by reading his books and watching some of the videos. We also wrote stories about what it would be like if the Cat in the Hat came to our house. We had some guest readers come over from Target and read a story to us!

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

Jacksonville Giants

Today we had a flag raising ceremony and a teachers vs students basketball game to celebrate our Book of the Month, Salt in his Shoes. The book is about Michael Jordan's pursuit of his dream to be an awesome basketball player.
Two players from the Jacksonville Giants showed up and played in the game as well! After the game the players made a stop by our class to get a picture and sign a few autographs! (THANK YOU MR. BILL!!!!!)
What a great day today! I hope everyone has a great weekend!

100th day of school

Thursday February 3,2011
We have already been in first grade 100 days?? WOW! 80 more to go! Can you believe how fast the year is flying by?
Today we celebrated the 100th day by making snack mix (5 items x 20 of each = 100), making  necklaces from 100 fruit loops, puzzles with 100 pieces, and connect the dots 1-100!
It was a great day! We are all so much smarter and we had so much fun finding different ways to make 100! We also had 4 helpers from Mr. Hamilton's class join the fun! Check out our pics!

Riley and Aryana are making 100th day snack mix!

"This is harder than it looks", said Caleb as he and Ronnie and Ashley made necklaces out of 100 fruit loops!

Siya and Brady are putting together a hundreds chart puzzle. I think Siya is wishing for the snack mix center??!!

One of Mr. Hamilton's students' demonstrates as Cynthia, George, and Austin wait their turn!

mmmm mmmm cheesy!

Functional writing is the genre we are learning in Writer's Workshop! Functional writing is writing that we use everyday! We have made lists, written thank you notes, etc. We are now writing to tell our readers "how to" do something. For our very first topic we will be writing to tell someone "how to" make a grilled cheese sandwich! And what a better way to learn than make them in class! So today we got out our big class griddle and made yummy, delicious, buttery, crispy, grilled cheese sandwiches. ( The describing words could go on and on)
It was a real treat! We made a list of materials that are needed today and tomorrow, after visiting the computer lab, we will begin writing the steps in order. What a fun way to learn!
YUM!!!!!!
On Thursday we will go to Mrs. Kelley's kindergarten class and make grilled cheese sandwiches for them and read them our directions! We can't wait!
